DIY Snatch Block Mark Hamill, who you can reach via the OrigamiBoats group on Yahoo, designed and build the snatch block below. UHMW plastic would work well in this design. The block is hot dip galvanized after it’s built. A wood lathe or router with a cove bit can be used to cut the notch in the pulley.

We’ve made several parts for our vessels; some a necessity and some just for fun. In addition we have melted lead, both for ingots and for the ballast to fill the keels in Seeker.

I finally decided to add a wing to the outside of the keels. This would allow more of the lead ballast to be located lower and also to help dampen roll while under way and at anchor. Winged keels are also added for performance. The keels job is to stop the boat from slipping sideways from the force on the sail.

1000 pounds, the first of 20,000 pounds. Besides a small leak in the old melting pot our Harbor Freight dual burner propane stove converted to lead smelter was doing good. 1000 pounds ready in 5 1/2 hours having burner 14 pounds of propane. So now we know we are going to need 280 pounds or about 66 gallons .
